Objectives

LIFE Biomass C+ aims to demonstrate improvements in climate mitigation strategies through the production of sustainable biofuel. It will utilise existing and underused infrastructure and water resources (i.e. irrigation channels, ponds, lakes, river arms) to produce zero-input biomass, with high starch content that will then be converted into bioethanol and eventually biofuel. To do this, the project proposes an innovative green technology of Green Floating Filters (GFF), where aquatic macrophyte plants (Typha domingensis) will be grown in multiple water bodies.

The project has the following specific goals:

  1. Provide a carbon positive energy balance and other environmental co-benefits.
    The project will realize important GHG emission savings and at the same time improve water quality and local biodiversity, thanks to the filtering and decontaminating effect of the GFF’s rhizomes.
  2. Develop a clean, dependable method to produce biofuel without utilizing agricultural land.
    The effects of biofuel production on direct and indirect land-use change have raised concerns about biofuels clashing with food security and increasing global competition for land. The EU has proposed a 7% limit on biofuels produced from food crops (wheat, corn, etc). Biomass C+ seeks to address this challenge by testing an innovative method to produce water-sourced biomass that is not in competition with agricultural land and offers a potential starch yield equal or higher than wheat.
  3. Demonstrate the applicability of Biomass C+ on an industrial scale.
    The innovative GFF system will be implemented in different water bodies, demonstrating that aquatic macrophytes can be grown at large scale. The project will also validate that the biomass can be processed at industrial scale. Together this will guarantee that the concept is directly replicable.
  4. Demonstrate the potential and cost-effectiveness of this new close to market concept.
    It is crucial for the success of this project to demonstrate the potential for market uptake and ensure its large scale deployment in the future. To do this, third parties will be involved in replication actions and a business plan detailing costs, risks, technical adaptations and foreseeable profits for market scale-up will be developed by all partners, thereby contributing to a low-carbon and climate resilient economy.
